You have to register a babying Spain within 8 days. The procedure to register is slightly different if the parents are married as opposed to non married.

If the parents are married, one of them needs to go to ’Registro Civil’ of the town they live or where the baby is born.

The paper work required is:

  • the medical delivery report called ‘Parte médico de alumbramiento’ you will receive this from the hospital
  • Passports/Identity cards of both parents
  • ‘Libro de familia’ you will receive when your marriage is registered in Spain
  • Residency documents for those who aren’t Spanish nationals

If the parents aren’t married the mother can register the baby but the father will be excluded from all parental duties/rights .Otherwise both parents need to go.

Paperwork for non married couples:

  • the medical delivery report called ‘Parte médico de alumbramiento’ you will receive this from the hospital
  • Passports/Identity cards of both parents
  • Indication of the mother’s marital status
  • If a parent has been married in the past a proof of seperation/divorce is needed

When you have registered your baby you will also need to add him or her to your padrón.

You also need to do the health registration of your baby. You can do the at the INSS (Social security registration).

The paperwork needed for this is:

  • Libro de Familia
  • Birth registration details
  • Padrón
  • Health card of the parents (tarjeta SIP)
  • ID card/ Passport

The social security registration (INSS) now enables you to register your baby at your local health center. You will then be appointed a paediatrician. It takes a few days normally to pick up your baby’s health card (SIP card)
